About Odontophorus melanonotus Gould, 1861
This species, the dark-backed wood quail, has a scientific name Odontophorus melanonotus Gould, 1861. Adults of the species measure 23 to 28 cm (9.1 to 11.0 in) in length. Both males and females weigh approximately 322 g (11.4 oz). Adult individuals of both sexes are overall brownish black, marked with fine chestnut vermiculation. Their throat and breast are colored reddish chestnut. Juvenile dark-backed wood quail share a similar color pattern, but are duller across their entire body. The dark-backed wood quail occurs in the Andes, ranging from the Nariño Department of southern Colombia southward to Cotopaxi Province in Ecuador. It lives in primary and secondary tropical forest, restricted to a fairly narrow altitudinal range between 1,100 and 2,200 m (3,600 and 7,200 ft). Although it is primarily terrestrial, the dark-backed wood quail roosts above ground in trees.
