About Octopus rubescens S.S.Berry, 1953
Octopus rubescens S.S.Berry, 1953 generally reaches a mantle length of 8โ10 cm (3.1โ3.9 in) and an arm length of 30โ40 cm (12โ16 in). Most adults weigh 100โ150 grams (3.5โ5.3 oz), though occasional individuals have been observed weighing up to 400 grams (14 oz). Like all octopus species, O. rubescens can change both its color and texture, resulting in a highly variable appearance. Its coloration can range from deep brick red to brown to white, or take the form of mottled mixtures of these three colors. At the northern end of this species' range, it can easily be mistaken for small individuals of Enteroctopus dofleini. The two species can be distinguished by a feature of O. rubescens: three eyelash-like papillae located below the eyes, which are not present in E. dofleini.
