About Octopus pallidus Hoyle, 1885

Octopus pallidus, commonly known as the pale octopus, is a species of octopus found in Oceania. Immediately after hatching, pale octopuses begin foraging, feeding primarily on bivalves. During the night, this species hides in rubble to ambush and surprise its prey. Female pale octopus maturation depends on both age and seasonal conditions. Individuals of both sexes are able to distinguish between vertical and horizontal rectangles, can tell different gradient shades of grey apart from each other, and can distinguish gradient greys from uniform grey. Scientists have studied this species in their work to develop methods for determining octopus age using stylets and pigment.
