About Octopus kaurna Stranks, 1990

Octopus kaurna, commonly called the southern sand octopus, is an octopus species native to the waters surrounding the Great Australian Bight and Tasmania. This species can reach an arm span of up to 50 cm (20 in). It has long, unusually thin tentacles that are joined at the base by webbing and covered with small suckers. Timothy Nathaniel Stranks first identified this species, which he formally described in 1990. The specific epithet kaurna comes from the name of an Australian Aboriginal clan that historically lived in the Adelaide region of South Australia.
