Ocimum gratissimum L., commonly called clove basil, African basil, and known as wild basil in Hawaii, is a species of basil. It is native to Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia, and the Bismarck Archipelago. It has become naturalized in Polynesia, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama, the West Indies, Brazil, and Bolivia. In Nigeria, it is called scent leaf and used to prepare pepper soup, local rice, beans, plantain, conventional soup, and other local delicacies.
