About Ochlodes venata faunus (Turati, 1905)
Ochlodes venatus, commonly called the far eastern large skipper, is a skipper butterfly species that belongs to the family Hesperiidae. This name was used for a long time to refer to Europe's large skipper, but it actually applies to that species' Far Eastern sister species; Europe's large skipper is now classified as O. sylvanus. There is ongoing debate over whether the large skipper should instead be placed within O. venatus as the subspecies sylvanus or faunus. An ICZN Opinion issued in 1944 stated that the genus name Ochlodes is grammatically masculine, so the correct species epithet for this taxon is venatus. Despite this ruling, many sources continue to list the species under the name Ochlodes venata. These two skipper taxa may occur sympatrically in China. Ochlodes venatus is distributed from China eastwards to Korea and Japan.
