About Ocenebra erinaceus (Linnaeus, 1758)
This species is Ocenebra erinaceus (Linnaeus, 1758), a marine gastropod. The shell of Ocenebra erinaceus ranges in size from 8 mm to 65 mm. It bears four to seven varices, and is nodulous, with encircling prominent, cord-like raised ribs. These ribs alternate in size, and the smaller ribs are minutely scabrous. The varices can be frondose, lamellated, or occasionally appressed. In some cases, the larger revolving ribs thickly overlap the varices, forming a series of elongated nodules. The shell is yellowish-brown externally, and whitish on the interior. This marine species is distributed in European waters ranging from Norway to the Black Sea, and also occurs in the Atlantic Ocean off the Azores and Madeira.
