About Occidozyga sumatrana (Peters, 1877)
The Sumatran puddle frog, scientifically named Occidozyga sumatrana, is a frog species that belongs to the family Dicroglossidae. This species may be endemic to Indonesia, but it has frequently been misidentified as Occidozyga laevis, and was long classified as the junior synonym of Occidozyga laevis. Its currently confirmed distribution is limited to Sumatra, Java, and the islands of Sipora and Simeulue. Because of past taxonomic confusion, the true distribution of this species remains poorly understood, and it is likely that its range extends more widely, possibly from India through Malaysia to southern China. Its natural habitats include tropical moist lowland forests, rivers, intermittent freshwater marshes, and human-made canals and ditches. This species is currently threatened by habitat loss. A new population of the Sumatran puddle frog was most recently reported in Singapore on August 23, 2018.
