About Nymphaea elegans Hook.

This species, Nymphaea elegans Hook., has unbranched rhizomes that do not produce stolons. Its petiole lacks any trichomes. The upper surface of its leaves is green, while the submerged lower surface is purple. For reproduction, this species produces fragrant protogynous flowers. On the first day of flowering, the flowers are functionally female, and they become functionally male over the following two days. This plant is used as both medicine and food.
