About Nyctoporis carinata LeConte, 1851

Nyctoporis carinata, commonly called the armored night-walker and the flightless darkling beetle, is a species of beetle native to coastal California and the California Coast Ranges. Adult individuals of this species reach 12 to 16 millimeters (0.47 to 0.63 inches) in length. Their bodies are black, covered with indentations, bumps, and ridges. Golden hairs grow on their feet, which are also called tarsi. This species is flightless because its wing covers are fused. Nyctoporis carinata can be found living in leaf litter and rocky debris. Preliminary genetic analysis indicates that Nyctoporis carinata and Nyctoporis vandykei may actually be the same synonymous species.
