Nuphar variegata Engelm. ex Durand is a rhizomatous, perennial aquatic herb. Its rhizomes measure 2.5โ7 cm wide. The species produces both submerged and floating leaves, with most leaves being floating. Submerged leaves range from 7โ35 cm long and 5โ25 cm wide, and the leaf petiole is flattened. Its yellow flowers are 2.5โ5 cm wide, and either float on the water surface or extend above it. Flowers have 6 yellow sepals that enclose small petals. The gynoecium is made up of 7โ28 carpels. The stigmatic disk, which measures 8โ20 mm wide, is green to yellow, very rarely red, and has 7โ28 stigmatic rays. The fruit is fleshy, ovoid, strongly ribbed, 2โ4.3 cm long and 2โ3.5 cm wide, and bears seeds 2.5โ5 mm long. This species grows in ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers in water up to 2 meters deep.
