About Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC.
Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC. is a perennial, rhizomatous aquatic herb. Its rhizomes measure 20โ70 cm in length and 1โ3 cm in width. The floating leaves are ovate, 5โ10(โ13) cm long and 6โ12 cm wide. The petiole is pubescent and 20โ50 cm long, while the submerged leaves of this species are round and wrinkled.
The flowers of Nuphar pumila are yellow, actinomorphic, and faintly fragrant, with a width of 1โ4.5(โ6) cm. The flower peduncles are pubescent and 40โ50 cm long. The flowers have five ovate to spathulate sepals that are 16โ29 mm long and 9โ16 mm wide; the abaxial surface of the sepals is often green. Each flower has 9โ13 petals, 35โ65 stamens that make up the androecium, and 7โ12 carpels that form the gynoecium. The star-shaped stigmatic disk of the flower, marked with 7โ12 stigmatic rays, is 6โ8.5 mm wide. The fruit of this species is green, 1โ2 cm wide, and produces greenish brown, ovoid to oblong seeds that measure 3โ5 mm long.
Nuphar pumila is native to China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Poland. The typical subspecies Nuphar pumila subsp. pumila occurs in Europe. It grows in lakes, ponds, and slowly flowing rivers with nutrient-poor water, at water depths of 0.5โ3 m. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant.
