About Nucras lalandii (Milne-Edwards, 1829)

Nucras lalandii is a large, heavy-bodied species within its genus. Adult N. lalandii typically have a snout-to-vent length (SVL) ranging from 7.5 to 9.5 cm (3.0–3.7 in), and can reach a maximum SVL of just over 10 cm (3.9 in). This species is found in Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa. Its preferred natural habitats are grassland, shrubland, and savanna, occurring at altitudes from sea level up to 2,300 m (7,500 ft). Nucras lalandii is oviparous. Females lay clutches of 3 to 9 eggs, with each egg averaging 11 mm by 17.5 mm (0.43 in by 0.69 in). Eggs hatch in late January and early February, and newly hatched individuals measure approximately 8 cm (3.1 in) in total length including the tail.
