About Notropis maculatus (Hay, 1881)

The taillight shiner, whose scientific name is Notropis maculatus, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish that belongs to Leuciscidae, the fish family that includes shiners, daces, and minnows. This species is commonly found in the southeastern United States. Its documented range covers the lower Mississippi River basin, parts of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina, the Sabine River in Texas, and all of Florida except for the southern tip of the state. Taillight shiners live in shallow, slow-moving pools, rivers, lakes, or swamps, and these habitats typically contain some aquatic vegetation. The IUCN has classified the conservation status of the taillight shiner as least concern, in recognition of the species' wide distribution and large existing populations.
