The river shiner, scientifically named Notropis blennius (Girard, 1856) (also referred to as Alburnops blennius), is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish that belongs to Leuciscidae, the family of shiners, daces, and minnows. It occurs in the United States and Canada. Its distribution covers the Hudson Bay basin from Alberta to Manitoba, extending south through the Red River in Minnesota and North Dakota. It also inhabits the Mississippi River basin, ranging from Wisconsin and Minnesota south to Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, west to eastern Colorado, and east to West Virginia.
