About Notodonta torva (Hübner, 1803)

Notodonta torva, commonly called the large dark prominent, is a moth species belonging to the family Notodontidae. This species was first formally described by Jacob Hübner in 1803. Its distribution extends across most of Europe, where it only occurs as a very rare immigrant to Great Britain, and continues eastward to China, Korea, and Japan. The wingspan of adult individuals measures around 48 millimeters. In western Europe, adults are active in flight from the end of April through August, producing two generations per year. The larvae of this species primarily feed on species from the Populus genus, specifically including Populus tremula and Populus nigra, and from the Salix genus, specifically including Salix caprea, Salix cinerea, and Salix phylicifolia. Larvae can be found in June, and then again from August to September. Notodonta torva overwinters in its pupal life stage.
