Notocypraea piperita, commonly known as the pepper cowry, has an adult shell size ranging from 16 to 30 millimeters. Its dorsal shell surface typically displays pale brown or peach-colored transverse bands that sit against a lighter paler background. The base of the shell is whitish or yellowish, and it has small dark spots along its ventral margin. This species of cowry lives subtidally on rocky substrates. Both the species itself and its recognized subspecies are distributed in the seas off the coast of southern Australia and northern Tasmania.
