About Notochelys platynota (Gray, 1834)

The Malayan flat-shelled turtle, with the scientific name Notochelys platynota (Gray, 1834), is a species of turtle native to Southeast Asia. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus Notochelys, meaning the genus contains only this one species. This turtle occurs across mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Singapore. It is also found in parts of the Malay Archipelago, specifically Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. The original type locality for this species was recorded as "in India Orientali"; this was later restricted to "Sumatra; Singapore" by Gray in 1863 (page 177). The species inhabits lowland forests and wetlands, including streams and small creeks.
