This species is found in North America, with recorded occurrences in British Columbia, Quebec, Alaska, California, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. In its range, it typically inhabits open forests and meadows. Adult Notiophilus sylvaticus are gregarious, mostly active during the day, and exhibit wing dimorphism: some adult individuals are brachypterous, while others are macropterous.
