About Nothoprocta ornata (G.R.Gray, 1867)
The ornate tinamou, Nothoprocta ornata (G.R.Gray, 1867), is approximately 32 cm (13 in) long. Its upper body is brownish-grey, patterned with black and buff markings. Its underparts are tawny-buff with darker barring. Its head and neck are buff with prominent black spots, it has a slender, curved bill, and its legs are either yellow or grey. This species is native to the puna region of central Peru, the Andes of southeastern Peru, western Bolivia, extreme northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. The ornate tinamou inhabits high-altitude grassland, as well as shrubland at both high and low elevations. It has had some degree of success establishing populations on farmland. It prefers elevations between 3,450 m and 4,700 m (11,320–15,420 ft).
