Nothofagus pumilio, commonly known as lenga beech, can reach a maximum height of 35 m (115 ft) and a maximum trunk diameter of 1.7 m (5.6 ft). In southern Patagonia, this species grows to a maximum height of 30 m (100 ft), with a maximum trunk diameter of 1.5 m (4.9 ft). In more northern regions, it only grows at elevations above 1000 meters (3300 ft), where it takes the form of a shrub. Its leaves are dark green, elliptic, toothed, 2–4 cm long, and have irregularly lobed margins; they turn yellow and reddish in autumn. It produces a small nut fruit that is 4–7 mm long.
