About Nothofagus macrocarpa (A.DC.) F.M.Vázquez & R.A.Rodr.
Nothofagus macrocarpa (A.DC.) F.M.Vázquez & R.A.Rodr. is a tree that reaches 4 to 10 meters in height. It has a stout trunk, which may grow alone or as two or three trunks emerging from the base. Its bark is rough, grayish brown, and marked with both longitudinal and transverse cracks. The tree forms a leafy, densely branched crown that is 3 to 5 meters wide. Its leaves are bright green with wavy edges, typically oval in shape, and measure 13 to 45 millimeters long by 7 to 23 millimeters wide. This species grows at higher elevations in the Altos de Cantillana, located in Melipilla Province southwest of Santiago, Chile, at approximately 2,200 meters elevation. It also occurs further east in the Andes foothills of Cachapoal Province, where it grows between 500 and 2,000 meters elevation. Populations on Cerro El Roble and other nearby mountains that were originally classified as Nothofagus macrocarpa were reclassified as the separate distinct species Nothofagus rutila in 2000.
