About Noetia ponderosa (Say, 1822)
Scientific name: Noetia ponderosa (Say, 1822). This species has a rounded trigonal shell, which is almost as high as it is long. The shell has 27 to 31 squared radial ribs, separated by fine incised lines. It has a distinctive brown or black periostracum. Both the exterior and interior of the shell are white. Adult individuals reach an approximate size of 50 to 60 mm. This species is distributed along the Atlantic coast of North America, ranging from Virginia to Florida. It also occurs in the West Indies, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Central America. Noetia ponderosa typically lives in shallow subtidal or tidal soft sandy substrates.
