About Nodipecten subnodosus (G.B.Sowerby I, 1835)

Nodipecten subnodosus is a scallop species that has the common name giant lion's paw. It is native to the Pacific coast and Gulf of California coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, with a range that extends south to the western coast of Peru. During each annual spawning event, the giant lion's paw scallop releases both eggs and sperm. It can potentially self-fertilize, and it has high fecundity of over 20 million eggs per individual per spawn; these two factors together increase the chance of variation in reproductive success. This species is cultivated through aquaculture.
