About Nocomis raneyi Lachner & Jenkins, 1971

The bull chub, scientifically known as Nocomis raneyi, is a freshwater fish species that is part of Leuciscidae, the fish family that includes shiners, daces, and minnows. This species occurs in Atlantic drainages of the eastern United States, ranging from the James River in Virginia to the Neuse River in North Carolina, and it lives predominantly in areas above the Fall Line. Bull chubs can reach a total length of 32 centimeters, which equals 13 inches, but most individuals grow to around 18 centimeters, or 7.1 inches. They have a chubby body shape with a pointed snout and a small, subterminal mouth. Their sides are gold or brown, and their fins are pale or yellowish. Spawning male bull chubs develop a rose color on their belly.
