About Nisaetus bartelsi (Stresemann, 1924)
This hawk-eagle is approximately 60 cm (24 in) long. Its head and neck are rufous, and it is heavily barred black on its underside. This majestic, intricately patterned eagle has a long black crest on its head, which it holds almost vertically, and the crest is tipped with white. The crown is black, sitting atop a chestnut head and nape. The back and wings are dark brown, fading into a lighter brown tail that has wide cream stripes. The throat is creamy white with a black stripe that runs down to the whitish breast and underparts, which are heavily barred with chestnut. Juvenile birds have similar coloration to adults, but have plainer underparts and a duller head. The sexes have similar appearance. This species is an Indonesian endemic, and the Javan hawk-eagle lives in the humid tropical forests of Java. Its range in East Java includes Sempu Island, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Meru Betiri National Park and Alas Purwo National Park. Individuals can also be found in captivity at zoos such as Kebun Binatang Bandung.
