About Niphates digitalis (Lamarck, 1814)

Niphates digitalis, commonly called the pink vase sponge, is a species of demosponge. This sponge can reach up to 50 centimeters in both height and width, though most individuals are smaller than this maximum size. Its most common growth forms are vase-shaped, tube-shaped, or cup-shaped, with a narrow base that widens toward the top, and it appears somewhat flattened in cross-section. It rarely grows in a fan shape. Despite its common name, pink vase sponge, it has been observed in a range of colors including blue, gray, lavender, and shades from purplish to pink. Its surface is coarse and porous, and covered with conules or spines that measure up to 6 millimeters long.
