About Nigetia formosalis Walker, 1866

Nigetia is a monotypic moth genus that belongs to the family Erebidae. This genus contains just one species, Nigetia formosalis Walker, 1866, which is commonly called the thin-winged algibelle or thin-winged owlet moth. This species has a scattered distribution across eastern North America, ranging from Ontario and Connecticut in the north, down to Florida and Texas in the south. Both the Nigetia genus and the Nigetia formosalis species were first described by Francis Walker in 1866. The wingspan of this moth is approximately 19 mm. Within its range, there is one annual generation in the northern areas, and two or more annual generations in the southern areas. Larvae of Nigetia formosalis have been successfully reared using Protococcus species as food, and they likely also feed on lichens.
