About Nestegis cunninghamii (Hook.f.) L.A.S.Johnson

Nestegis cunninghamii (Hook.f.) L.A.S.Johnson, previously published under the synonym Notelaea cunninghamii, is commonly known as black maire, and is a tree native to New Zealand. It grows to over 20 metres in height, and bears long, leathery leaves with a recessed midrib. This tree has rough, cork-like bark, and produces red or yellow fruits. Due to its high value as a source of hard timber and firewood, black maire is now found only in small areas of North Island forests.
