The leaves are green and roughly heart-shaped. This species produces orange or red drupes as fruit, and its flowering period runs from August to April. It grows across a range from lowlands to mountain areas of New Zealand, occurring on all of the country's major islands, but is scarce in the northern parts of the North Island. In the South Island, it is only found at elevations up to 600 metres, and on Stewart Island it is only found at elevations up to 450 metres. Nertera villosa is resistant to browsing.
