This is a species of nerite with the scientific name Nerita tessellata Gmelin, 1791. The shell of this nerite can grow up to 25 millimeters in maximum size. The background color of the shell is black, and it typically features white markings. Quite often, these white markings are arranged in a regular, evenly-spaced pattern, which gives the shell a checkered or tessellated, tiled appearance. This characteristic pattern is the origin of the species' specific name. This nerite is found along the shores of the Western Atlantic Ocean. Its documented distribution includes Florida, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, the West Indies, and Brazil. This species inhabits the upper portion of the intertidal zone, where it lives on rocks.
