Nerita funiculata is a small nerite species with a varied dark shell found along the eastern Pacific from Peru to the Gulf of California.

About Nerita funiculata Menke, 1850

Nerita funiculata, commonly called funiculate nerites, typically reach around 1.2 cm in height and 1.3 cm in width. Some individual specimens can grow as large as 1.8 cm tall by 1.95 cm wide. Their base color is black, and they are sometimes irregularly splotched with a paler color that ranges between yellowish grey and orange. The shell is not fully spherical, with a depressed spire. This species is distributed from Peru northward to the northern tip of the Gulf of California, and is also found around Cocos Island. It also occurs in the Galápagos Islands, where it has been observed in waters surrounding Isla Santiago, Isla Santa Cruz, Isla Marchena, Isla de San Cristóbal, and Isla Genovesa. It has not been recorded from Isla Isabela, the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago.
