About Neptis goochii Trimen, 1879
Neptis goochii, commonly known as the small streaked sailer, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is found in Sub-Saharan Africa, and its natural habitat consists of forests. The wingspan of adult males ranges from 30 to 35 mm, while the wingspan of adult females ranges from 34 to 38 mm. Some taxonomic treatments consider this taxon, N. goochi Trim. (48 f), to likely be only the East African race of Neptis melicerta. It differs from the typical form of Neptis melicerta in several characteristics: discal spots 5 and 6 on the forewing are broader, and more or less completely joined together; the median band of the hindwing is broader, measuring about 5 mm in breadth; and most notably, the second marginal line on the underside of the hindwing is not thickened, or only slightly thickened. The species ranges across an area from Natal to Kilimanjaro. Adult Neptis goochii are active on the wing year-round, with a population peak occurring between December and May. The larvae of this butterfly feed on species in the genus Acalypha, as well as Alchornea cordifolia and species in the genus Dalbergia.
