About Nephrotoma appendiculata (Pierre, 1919)
Nephrotoma appendiculata (Pierre, 1919) has a wingspan of approximately 50 mm (2.0 in), with a body length ranging from 13 to 15 mm (0.5–0.6 in). Its body is primarily yellow, with several short black stripes on the thorax, a black horseshoe-shaped mark on the side, and a broad dark stripe on each abdominal segment. A thin yellow line runs near the leading edge of the wings. The wing stigma is typically pale, though it may occasionally be dark. This species is quite similar in appearance to Nephrotoma flavescens. This crane fly is distributed across most of Europe, North Africa, the Near East, and an established population occurs in Southern Alberta, Canada. Its typical habitats include woodland edges, gardens, fields, rough grassland, and farmland.
