About Neotibicen tibicen (Linnaeus, 1758)
Neotibicen tibicen is especially active in the morning, which is the origin of its common name, morning cicada. This species is strictly ectothermic, so it only becomes active in the morning after basking in sunlight to raise its body temperature. It was originally named Tibicen chloromerus, but in 2008, its name was changed to Tibicen tibicen, after researchers determined this specific epithet was the one used in the first published description of the species. In 2015, the species was moved from the genus Tibicen to the genus Neotibicen. N. tibicen is the most commonly encountered species in the genus Neotibicen, because it often perches on low-growing vegetation. It is also considered the most common Neotibicen species in North America.
