About Navarretia squarrosa (Eschsch.) Hook. & Arn.

Navarretia squarrosa, commonly called skunkbush, skunkweed, or California stinkweed, is a spreading annual plant native to North America. It is best known for its strong skunk-like odour. It reaches a height of 10 to 60 cm. Its flowers are tubular, range in color from lilac pink to deep blue, grow up to 12 mm in diameter, and form dense clusters at the ends of stems. These flower heads are surrounded by spiny sepals and bracts. The plant’s leaves are pinnately lobed and also spiny.
