About Naultinus punctatus Gray, 1843

The Wellington green gecko, with the scientific name Naultinus punctatus Gray, 1843, is a species of gecko that is found exclusively in the southern half of New Zealand's North Island. It was previously classified as a subspecies of the Auckland green gecko; when grouped together, the two were called the common green gecko. This species is much larger and more heavily built than the Auckland green gecko, and can be told apart by its yellow foot soles, in contrast to the Auckland green gecko's grey-green foot soles. The Wellington green gecko lives an arboreal lifestyle in scrub and forest habitats, particularly areas dominated by kanuka and manuka. While it hunts for moths and flies during the night, it also regularly sun-basks. When provoked, it displays aggressive behavior: it bares its open blue mouth and barks.
