About Naticarius stercusmuscarum (Gmelin, 1791)

Naticarius stercusmuscarum (Gmelin, 1791) produces shells that grow between 25 and 56 millimetres (0.98 to 2.20 inches) in size. The shell surface is yellow or cream-colored, covered in dense small red-brown dots. This mollusk has a brownish mantle and foot dotted with bright spots, and it has a well-developed foot with two visible cephalic appendages. This fairly common species occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and off northwestern Africa. It lives primarily on sandy and muddy seabeds, but can also be found on rocky bottoms. Fossils of this species are found in sediments from the Pleistocene to the recent era in Italy and Greece.
