About Narthecium ossifragum (L.) Huds.
Narthecium ossifragum (L.) Huds., commonly known as bog asphodel, is a tufted, hairless herbaceous perennial plant that grows from a creeping rhizome. Its leaves are narrow, flattened, and sword-shaped, reaching up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, and are often tinged with orange. It produces a spike-shaped inflorescence holding bright yellow, star-like flowers around 0.7 inches (18 mm) across. These flowers have short white hairs on their orange stamens, and the plant bears deep orange fruits. Bog asphodel has a temperate oceanic distribution across northern and western Europe. Within the British Isles, it can be found in Scotland, Northwest England, Wales, Southwest England, and most of Ireland. It grows in wet soils and peats, inhabiting bogs, wet heaths, and flushes, and also occurs in purple moor grass and rush pastures.
