About Nannophryne variegata Günther, 1870
Nannophryne variegata, which is also commonly called the Eden Harbour toad or Patagonian toad, is a species of toad that belongs to the family Bufonidae. This toad is found in southern Argentina, ranging from Neuquén Province southward, and in Chile. There is also a single recorded observation of this species from Peru, but this record has not been confirmed, due to the extreme geographic and ecological isolation of this location from the species' known range. Its distribution reaches as far south as Tierra del Fuego, at 53°S latitude. This makes Nannophryne variegata one of the southernmost amphibian species in the world, a title it shares with the frog species Batrachyla antartandica. The species' natural habitats include temperate to cold humid forests, bogs, and Magellanic tundra. It can be found in marshes, under fallen logs within the Nothofagus forest region, and on tundra areas surrounded by low-growing Nothofagus forest in the subantarctic region. Nannophryne variegata reproduces in shallow temporary pools and swamps. It is locally abundant and can tolerate a moderate amount of habitat disturbance.
