About Nabalus asper (Michx.) Torr. & A.Gray
Nabalus asper (Michx.) Torr. & A.Gray, previously classified as Prenanthes aspera, is commonly known as rough rattlesnakeroot or rough white lettuce. It is a perennial plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is found in the eastern United States, ranging from South Dakota and Pennsylvania southward to Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama. It blooms during late summer and autumn. It was reclassified from the genus Prenanthes to Nabalus in 2010.
Regarding its historic distribution: Jason Hale collected this species at some point before 1843 in Louisiana, likely close to his then-residence in Rapides Parish, and most likely from a prairie that no longer exists today. This specimen remains the only confirmed known collection of Nabalus asper from Louisiana to date.
