About Mytilus chilensis Hupé, 1854

Mytilus chilensis Hupé, 1854, commonly known as the Chilean mussel or Chilean blue mussel, is a species of blue mussel. It is native to the coasts of Chile, ranging from the Biobío Region at 37°S to Cape Horn at 55°S. Genomic evidence confirms that this native South American blue mussel is genetically distinct from three Northern Hemisphere Mytilus species: M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis, and M. trossulus. It is also genetically different from Mytilus platensis, the other smooth-shelled mussel species native to South America.
