About Mythimna convecta Walker, 1857

Mythimna convecta, commonly called the common armyworm or Australian armyworm, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. This species is found in Australia. The adult moth has an approximate wingspan of 40 mm. The common name "armyworm" refers to the behavior of this species' larvae. The larvae often spread out in a line across lawns or pastures, and slowly march forward in a large group while consuming any foliage they encounter. The larvae feed on a variety of agricultural plants, including pineapples (Ananas comosus), sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and many grass species from the family Poaceae. Because of this feeding habit, Mythimna convecta larvae are considered an agricultural pest.
