About Myrmecia urens Lowne, 1865

Myrmecia urens is a species of bulldog ant that belongs to the genus Myrmecia, and it is native to Australia. Ant pollination is generally uncommon, but the orchid Leporella fimbriata is a myrmecophyte that can only be pollinated by the winged males of Myrmecia urens. Pollination of this orchid typically takes place between April and June, on warm afternoons. The process may span several days, ending when all the male ants die due to their short natural lifespan. The orchid flower mimics the queens of Myrmecia urens, so male ants move between individual flowers attempting to mate with the mimic flowers.
