Myripristis vittata Valenciennes, 1831 reaches a maximum total length of 25 centimeters (around 9.8 inches). Members of this species typically occur in small groups, and sometimes form large schools. This fish is distributed across the Indo-Pacific, where it occurs primarily around oceanic islands, ranging from the Mascarene Islands and Seychelles east to French Polynesia and the Hawaiian Islands. It inhabits tropical marine reef-associated environments, with a recorded depth range of 3 to 80 meters, and is more commonly found between 15 and 80 meters deep. Individuals of this species have been observed occasionally swimming upside down. It is a nocturnal plankton feeder. The species is sometimes sold in the aquarium trade.
