About Myotis mystacinus (Kuhl, 1817)

This species, commonly called the whiskered bat, is a small bat. Individuals measure 3.5 to 4.8 cm in body length, have a wingspan of 21 to 24 cm, and weigh 4 to 8 grams. It has long fur: dorsal fur (on the back) ranges in color from dark brown to golden, while ventral fur (on the front) is greyish. For echolocation, M. mystacinus uses frequencies between 34 and 102 kHz, with most energy concentrated at 53 kHz, and an average call duration of 3.0 milliseconds. The whiskered bat is primarily a European species, occurring across most of mainland Europe, the United Kingdom, and extending east as far as the Urals. It has also been recorded in Morocco, northern Africa. It occupies a wide variety of habitats, including forests, meadows, and semi-desert, and is frequently found living in urban areas. It feeds on insects, making it an insectivore.
