About Myophonus insularis Gould, 1863
This species, Myophonus insularis Gould, 1863, measures 28 to 30 cm (11 to 12 in) in total length, with wing length ranging from 15 to 16 cm (5.9 to 6.3 in). Its plumage is mostly blackish-blue, with some individual feathers in navy blue or metallic blue. Some underwing coverts have white bases, and its underparts are blackish. Scaled patterning appears across its neck, breast and flanks. It has deep red eyes, and black lores, bill, and legs. Adult males and females have identical plumage and appearance. Juveniles are dull blackish with a subtle bluish tinge, and have a yellowish gape.
This thrush is endemic to Taiwan. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and it occurs at elevations up to 2,700 m (8,900 ft).
It is most active at dawn and dusk. It moves by jumping among rocks along forest streams, and frequently opens and closes its tail when perched on a rock. Its call is a sharp whistle described as screee, and its song consists of loud, melodious whistles.
