About Musa itinerans Cheesman

Musa itinerans Cheesman, commonly known as the Yunnan banana, is a species of banana native to continental Southeast Asia, ranging from Northeast India to Vietnam. Its confirmed distribution includes the Assam region of northwest India, Bangladesh, south-central and southeastern China, China's Hainan province, Laos, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. In China, the species is an important food source for wild Asian elephants. The tender inner stalk of Musa itinerans is harvested for human consumption. It holds the distinction of being the 24,200th plant species added to and saved by Kew Gardens' Millennium Seed Bank Project. When this species was added to the collection, the seed bank reached the milestone of holding 10% of the world's wild plant species.
