About Musa banksii F.Muell.

Musa banksii F.Muell. is a species of wild banana belonging to the genus Musa. It is native to New Guinea and Queensland, Australia, and is most likely an introduced species in Samoa. It was first formally described by Ferdinand von Mueller in 1863, using plant material collected in Queensland, Australia. After its initial description, taxonomists have differed on its classification, alternately treating it as a distinct species or a subspecies of Musa acuminata. Ernest E. Cheesman was the first to note a close relationship between Musa banksii and Musa acuminata, doing so in 1948. In 1957, Norman Simmonds reclassified Musa banksii as a subspecies of Musa acuminata, a decision based on extensive field observations he conducted in New Guinea, Australia, and Samoa. In 1976, George Argent treated it again as a separate species.
