About Muraena clepsydra Gilbert, 1898
Muraena clepsydra, commonly called the hourglass moray, is a species of moray eel that inhabits coral reefs. Its distribution ranges from the Gulf of California to Peru, and it is also found in the Galapagos Islands. This species was first formally described by Charles Henry Gilbert in 1898. It lives at depths between 0 and 25 metres (0 to 82 feet). Mature males of this species can grow to a maximum total length of 120 centimetres (47 inches), though most individuals reach a total length of 60 centimetres (24 inches) on average. Based on its broad geographic range, the absence of identified major threats, and no recorded population decline, the IUCN Red List currently classifies Muraena clepsydra as a species of Least Concern.
